Great Britain
Kings of Wessex. Ælfred the Great (871-899) portrait 'Monogram' Penny (c. 880) MS62 NGC, London mint, London monogram & portrait type, S-1061, North-644. ÆLFR|ED REX, diademed bust right / Londonia in monogram; trefoil above and below. An absolutely stunning and superb example of this classic type, featuring an incredibly deep cabinet tone as well as a sharp, centered strike. The metal is of excellent quality--ever important on these early English issues--and overall the piece exudes tremendous eye-appeal. A similarly graded specimen, the Newman example (an NGC MS63), realized a hammer of $45,000 (!) on an estimate of $10,000-12,500 in 2014. Though not nearly as impressive as a fabled Newman pedigree, the present example is just as attractive and boasts its own prior sales history dating back over 30 years.
Having a number of rival kingdoms dividing her, England finally became unified under Ælfred, who helped repel the Viking and Danish invaders. His tactful leadership eventually garnered him the eipthet 'the Great,' a name which has yet to be applied to any English monarch to follow him. An historically important and highly attractive coin harkening back to the Roman Imperial obverse style of a bust in profile.
