Henry VIII (1509-1547) gold 1/2 Sovereign 1544-1547 AU50 NGC, Southwark mint, Third coinage of 1544-1547, "S" mm, 6.19g, S-2297, N-1828. Rare variety without scepter. Typically crude, this piece is nevertheless well above-average in terms of strike and preservation for the issue, with minor off-centering compensated by a very broad flan. With scattered striking weakness to be found throughout, we note that the portrait of Henry exhibited here is outstanding, sharply detailed and instantly recognizable based on classic portraits of the king.
