Oliver Cromwell 1/2 Crown 1658 MS65 NGC, KM-PnD27, S-3227A, ESC-447. A sublime survivor of this elusive issue, manufactured with impressive care and preserved in absolute originality. Over both sides, the strike is deep and crisp, with broad denticles framing the central motifs. Simon's engraving, among the most detailed in history to that point, possesses profound artistic style, with his portrait of Crowell showing dot-like "stippling" that imparts dimension and hair that displays life-like flow. Obviously a long-time cabinet piece, both sides of this coin exhibit appealing compliments of patina over glossy surfaces, with antique-gold and blue tone mixing into the obverse, while a deep olive base adorns the reverse. Very little evidence of handling is present. Overall, an absolute Gem, quite possibly the finest example available to private collectors, and presently the single finest example graded by NGC or PCGS. An unquestionable masterpiece of the period!
