Charles II gold 5 Guineas 1683 XF40 PCGS, Royal mint, KM444.1, S-3331, Fr-281. Second Bust variety. A pleasing, problem-free example of this 5 guineas (100 shillings) denomination that was first instituted during the reign of Charles II. Lightly circulated, the highpoints of Charles' hair display some softening, but the surrounding appearance is consistent with coins of a higher grade, showing only wisps of friction over the reverse design and impressive amounts of original luster in the fields. A bit of striking softness unfortunately appears in the right two digits of the date, but it remains legible and is confirmed by the TRICESIMO QVINTO edge lettering. Seldom encountered finer.
