William & Mary gold "Elephant & Castle" 2 Guineas 1694/3 MS62★ NGC, Royal mint, KM482.2, Fr-302, S-3425. With exceptional iridescent rose color that permeates the surfaces, drawing the eye inward from the boldly bordered rims toward the conjoined busts of William and Mary. Closer inspection reveals an impressive amount of detail across the raised devices, thus confirming the Mint State status, while the surrounding, semi-reflective fields are devoid of any noteworthy post-strike imperfections. As the eye follows the luster around the flan, a few important characteristics are noted--from the popular elephant and castle hallmark below the jugate portraits that signifies that the gold specie used to strike this piece came from Guinea by way of The Africa Company of Merchants; to the inconspicuous flan imperfections on the reverse. The most important attribute, however, is arguably the 4/3 overdate which has been clearly rendered. A remarkable offering in total, not only the finest-certified of the type, but also the beneficiary of the coveted "star" moniker for incredible eye appeal, sure to bring a substantial amount of bidders to the table.
