William III gold "Fine Work" 5 Guineas 1701 MS61 NGC, Royal mint, KM508, Fr-310, S-3456. Second bust, plain scepters, DECIMO TERTIO edge. An important issue within British numismatics, this beautifully crafted 5 Guineas features "fine-work" engraving that is readily observed throughout the King's coiffed portrait, as well as on the reverse designs. The whole of the planchet is infused with deep, golden color, accented by strokes of iridescent copper throughout the peripheral elements, and both sides overflow with original luster that easily travels the vibrant fields. Of little concern to its overall allure, minor post-strike handling effects are noted, providing a relatable level of character to the otherwise emboldened nature of this offering. For the advanced collector looking to procure a Mint-State example of this decidedly special type, the time has arrived.
