William III gold "Fine Work" 5 Guineas 1701 AU58 NGC, Royal mint, KM508, Fr-310, S-3456, Schneider-481. Variety with ornate scepters. Though the standard references do not note the relative scarcity of the plain versus ornate scepter varieties of the 1701 5 guineas, anecdotal evidence suggests that the ornate scepters variety is significantly harder to find. Indeed, we have offered over a dozen 1701 5 guineas for sale over the last decade, and not a single one of them is the ornate scepters variety. By cursory observation of recent auction records, it would seem that the relative rarity of plain to ornate scepter varieties is about ten to one. A very attractive piece, with just a bit too much rub on the high points that prevents it from being really mint state, but essentially problem-free. A great coin for both the type collector and the specialist.
