Royal mint, KM-PS4, S-PS2. An extraordinarily rare set, this is surely among the finest of very few known. The larger silver coins and gold have especially superb eye appeal, with deeply toned surfaces on the silver, and a vibrant cameo effect on the gold. Less than a half dozen such sets have sold at auction in recent years, and only one of them was certified by a third-party grading service. That set, sold in St. James 39 in September, 2016 for a hammer price of 68,000 GBP (about $88,000 at the time), was graded by PCGS. While some of the smaller denominations in it were of a technically superior grade to the set on offer here, everything from the halfcrown and up, except for the two pounds, was either equal or lower grade than the ones in the current set. Most notable was perhaps the sovereign, which is graded PR65 Ultra Cameo in this set, versus a PR62 Deep Cameo in that set, and the half sovereign - a PR64+ Deep Cameo in the previous set against an amazing PR66★ Ultra Cameo in this set. Overall, when one compares this set against that one, the superior group is obvious, and we would not be at all surprised to see this set surpass the mark made by the previous one in 2016. Sold with a contemporary, or slightly later, red leather case to present the coins in the same way that they were intended to be.
