George VI copper-nickel NGC-Certified Matte Proof 5 Shillings (Crown) Presentation Trio 1951,
1) Crown - PR67 NGC
2) Crown - PR65 NGC
3) Crown - PR65 NGC
Royal mint, KM880, S-4111. A lovely threesome of this rare matte proof crown, all remaining in nearly as-made condition, with only minor variation determining their numeric condition. Sold with a gold foil stamped red leather presentation book and a fascinating accompanying letter (now laminated) from the Earl Marshal's Office, dated 15th September 1954. It reads:
Dear Mr Melling,
Thank you for your most generous donation to our charity fundraising evening.
With regard to the 'Trial' Festival of Britain Crowns, I understand that the three pieces were produced consecutively, applying slight variations in pressure to each coin.
I further understand there to be four similar pieces! Nevertheless the coins you now hold, being scarcely different in appearance, are indeed matt proof.
Hope this helps. Do enjoy!
Yours sincerely,
S Leiney
This letter provides incredible insight into the production of this issue. If accurate, it appears that seven copies were originally struck, three of which are in this lot! If closely inspected, the pressure variances can almost be seen, with the sharpest detail, along with a partial wire rim on the reverse, appearing on the PR67. In addition, the PR67 shows an intriguing edge variation, struck with a flipped collar that results in the bottom of the edge lettering resting near the obverse surfaces; considering the minuscule mintage, this is unusual to say the least! Altogether magnificent, this trio must certainly be considered among the most charming 20th century crowns of Great Britain.
