William IV Proof Crown 1831 PR65 NGC, Royal mint, KM715, S-3833, ESC-2460. W. WYON in relief on truncation of neck, plain edge. Mintage: 100. Between NGC and PCGS, this piece is tied with four others for the finest graded proof 1831 crown. Of this variety, however, (with W. WYON spelled out, rather than just the initials W.W.) this is the single finest graded piece seen by other service, which is to be expected considering that this is the rarer of the two types. The last time we offered an example of this variety was an NGC PR64 Cameo in April 2017, where it sold for $51,700. Deep blue iridescence throughout gives this coin great eye appeal, and even when viewing this coin under magnification, we find no imperfections worthy of noting. Overall an exceptional coin, and surely one of the most coveted British crowns in existence.
