Italy
Vittorio Emanuele III silver Prova 20 Lire 1927-R Year V MS68 NGC, Rome mint, Pagani-191var. (R4). Plain edge. An early stage pattern, struck during the fifth year of the fascist regime, for what would become the longest produced crown of Vittorio Emanuele III. Struck primarily to test the ability to strike this new reverse design concept, only a basic obverse die was used, indicating that it was produced as a pattern (without retouching) on a 35 millimeter planchet, weighing 15 grams and in .800 fine silver. The reverse design is essentially the same as the adopted design, but without A·MOTT·INC· that was added below G·ROMAGNOLI to the right of the denomination below the exergual line on the circulating coinage. Preserved in essentially as-made quality, sharp detail resides in the centers with a touch of softening here and there in the peripheral beadwork. On both sides, incredibly fresh luster dominates due to swirling die polish, with nary an instance of tone visible. Like the following lot in this sale, the first of its kind that we have presented for sale, and an absolutely stunning item to behold. Worthy of the finest Italian cabinet!
