Mexico
Philip V gold Cob 8 Escudos ND (1714-23) Mo-J MS64 NGC, Mexico City mint, KM57.2. Full, sparkling mint luster consumes the fields and the strike is better than most, with sharp central definition and a peripheral strike that has rendered the mintmark, assayer and denomination fully legible, and the King's name nearly complete. The date, usually appearing a tad higher and to the left of the mintmark on the die, is entirely off the flan on this example. Almost certainly a coin that was recovered from the 1715 Plate Fleet and extremely scarce in this near-Gem preservation.
