Republic silver Specimen Pattern 5 Pesos 1950-Mo SP64 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn197. Similar to the adopted design for the type (KM467), with notable variances on the obverse being the absence of HIDALGO beneath the bust and the lack of mintmark, as well as the surrounding wreath, which is nearly closed in this pattern. On the reverse, the letter font is simpler and the expression of the coin's technical merits is reversed from the circulating issue, with fineness on the left and weight on the right of the national emblem. Very rare, this is only the second example that we are aware of, the last selling in our September 2014 Long Beach auction for $7,050. Carrying the same grade and a similar appearance, this specimen showcases a sharply struck design and delicate gold tones that sit over semi-reflective fields. Essentially free of contact, only faint wisps of handling determine the grade. Considering its rarity and size, an important coin for the collector of 20th century Mexican patterns.
