Republic silver "Miner & Elephant" Specimen Pattern Onza 1951 SP61 PCGS, Mexico City mint, KM-Pn198. One of the most desirable Mexican patterns of the 20th century due to the visually captivating display of a miner with pickax on the obverse and the perplexing illustration of an Asian elephant on the reverse. Extremely rare as well, with a reported mintage of just 2 pieces, but with 3 or 4 actually existing in all likelihood (the PCGS census shows a population of four, and although resubmissions are possible in this count, the existence of a 64 makes the reported mintage figure all but impossible). This example, with moderate handling in the fields, is a virtual twin, albeit with less toning, to the only other example we've seen; that piece, also graded PR61 by PCGS, was sold in our September 2014 Long Beach auction for for $14,100. As such, a rare second opportunity for the numerous collectors who missed their chance in 2014.
