Peter III Rouble 1762 CПБ-НК MS62 NGC, St. Petersburg mint, KM-C47.2, Dav-1682, Dia-7, Bit-11. Engrailed edge. A hauntingly attractive example of this scarce one-year type issued under the short-reigning and ill-fated Peter III. A czar never fully accepted by the Russian citizenry, Peter was assassinated after just six months on the throne. The details surrounding this plot have never been fully explained, though it is very likely that Catherine, his wife and more popular half, along with her partisans, were behind it in order to install her as czarina and establish her sole rule. In any event, the coinage of Peter is rare in any grade, but especially so in this gorgeous, near-choice state of preservation, featuring argent surfaces and an enchanting golden tone throughout. Compare to a similar specimen, also an NGC MS62, which realized a hammer of $14,000 in our 2017 CCE auction (sale 3054, lot 31290).
