Paul I "Admiral F.F. Ushakov" Cast silver Medal and lead Trial 1800,
(1) Cast silver Medal, as are all of these pieces, Diakov-254.1 (R5), Reichel-4492 (R5), 72mm, 82gm. Commemorating the liberation of the Ionian Islands by Admiral Ushakov. Obv. Uniformed bust of Admiral Ushakov right. Rev. Bird's-eye view of military ships before Corfu. XF Details (Obv. Graffiti) NGC. Bold portrait, with some weakness in the lettering on both sides. Light porosity is noted, as normal for a cast medal, with iridescent lead-gray patina. Included is a contemporary letter, and envelope, describing that the medal had been acquired in 1816-17, from the nephew of Ushakov.

(2) Lead die trial of the Ushakov medal, made out of collar with an uneven, oversized, flan. The details are bold, with the lettering extremely sharp. Several noticeable dings are displayed on both sides. The actual production date of the lead trial is unknown. The medal on offer is believed to have been in the possession of his nephew and/or Ushakov himself. The name of his nephew "Nikolas Ushakov" has been lightly engraved in the fields of the silver specimen.  According to our research, there are only four other silver medals of this issue known, all cast, and three of these are in museums.

This medal was produced following the capitulation of the French and liberation of Corfu by the Russian-Turkish fleet. A gold specimen was offered to Ushakov himself while the silver specimens to the captains of the Russian fleet and bronze to the other crew members. An astonishing set of medals in both Russian and Greek script highlighting this historically important event in the War of the Second Coalition.

On the 18th October 1797 the Treaty of Campo Formio signed by Napoleon Bonaparte and Count Philipp von Cobenzl lead to the definitive end to the Republic of Venice now partitioned and controlled by the French and Austrians. As a result of this, the Ionian Islands were under French rule and had stationed garrisons on the islands of Vido and Corfu. In 1798, Ushakov together with a Turkish squadron under Cadir Bey were ordered to occupy the Ionian Islands in the War of the Second Coalition. The Siege of Corfu began in 1798, followed by the Capture of Vido and finally capturing Corfu city on March 1, 1799. The islands became the Seven Islands Republic, a temporary protectorate of Russia and Turkey.  Following the capitulation of the French, Ushakov was honoured by both the Emperor of Russian and the Ottoman Sultan.
