Alexander I silver Proof Pattern Rouble 1804 PR55 NGC, Soho mint, KM-Pn66, Dia-293.1 (R2), Bit-Ж924 (R2). Plain edge. Obv. Armored and draped military bust right, wearing high collar. Rev. Textured Greek cross. Sometimes classified as jetons (жетоны) or tokens, these pattern issues were designed by C. H. Kuechler and struck at Bolton's Soho mint in Birmingham in order to display the artistry and craftsmanship which they were able to create. Additionally, they served as trial strikes for Bolton's new Russian minting facility. The present example features a deep cabinet tone and underlying brilliance, along with hints of goldenrod scattered throughout. Only the slightest degree of gentle handling causes this slightly impaired proof designation. Nevertheless, it remains an exceptionally attractive and important piece. An extremely rare striking in silver, this specimen represents the first of the type which we have offered in this metal.
