Alexander III gold Specimen Coronation Medal 1883 SP62 PCGS, by A. Griliches, Jr., Diakov-931.2, (R3), Smirnov-873/b, 50mm. Issued for the Coronation of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna. Obv. Conjoined busts of Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna. Rev. Russian double-headed eagle, with "God with Us" above. A spectacular gold medal, with high relief and brilliant greenish-gold tint. The fields are deeply mirrored, with nicely frosted devices, and both sides exhibit light hairlines. The most recent example of this size medal, struck in gold, that we can reference in the Hesselgesser collection piece, sold in May of 2005, Lot 2056, by Ira and Larry Goldberg. That similar condition example sold for $15,500 hammer.
