Ferdinand & Isabella (1474-1516) gold 2 Excelentes ND (after 1497)-S MS65 NGC, Seville mint, Fr-129, Cayon-2938. Cross and S flanked by pellets. Obv. X FE ˢ RИAИDVS ˢ ET ˢ ELISA ˢ BET ˢ DI GR, crowned and mantled busts facing one another; pellet between them. Rev. SVB ˢ VMBRA ˢ ALARVM ˢ TV, crowned coat-of-arms over eagle facing, head left, with wings spread. An exceptional example of this hammered gold issue, featuring a sharp, well centered strike, along with a flan of great metal quality. Rarely encountered in this gem status, and the finest graded which we have offered. A similar quality piece (NGC MS64) and of a slightly different variety realized a hammer of $9,000 in our 2017 ANA auction (sale 3056, lot 30465). Wholly pleasing and worthy of an elite bid.
