Sigismund Bathori Taler 1591 MS63 NGC, Nagybánya mint, Dav-8802, Resch-83 var. (rev. legend). Obv. Armored half-length bust right, holding scepter and sword-in-scabbard. Rev. Crowned coat-of-arms with angelic supporters. Featuring a lesser-seen reverse legend (Transsilvania as opposed to the more common Transsylvania), this choice taler likely represents the finest graded of the date by either service, with a sharply struck design and blazing argent surfaces. The flan is slightly clipped near the top, though is wholly consistent with the cruder form of manufacture for these types. For comparison, a similarly graded and dated piece (a 1592 NGC MS64) realized a hammer of $6,500 in our 2015 ANA auction (sale 3041, lot 32414).
