Divus Trajan (died AD 117). Æ contorniate (36mm, 17.00 gm, 6h). NGC Fine 5/5 - 2/5. Rome, private mint, struck mid-late 4th century AD. Laureate head of Divus Trajan right / Female figure, draped, seated right, facing a naked male figure, his hands bound behind him, standing by a tree; at far right, a seated prisoner. Cf. Alföldi, Kontorniat-Medaillons, vol. 6, 1, p. 102, 317 (same reverse type, described as Amphion, Zethus, and Dirce). Elkins, Medallions, Protocontorniates, and Contorniates in the Museum of Art and Archaeology, no. 38. Heavily corroded, brown patina with light green encrustation.
