Merovingian. Anonymous Denier ND (c. 670-750). XF. Frisia, 1.35g, Dep-1 (Astre), MEC-638, Prou-2878. Two intersecting A's, with two pellets in peripheral and three in central field / floral design with 8 petals and three pellets. Of exquisite rarity, this example bears a strong strike with high relief along the simple, geometric devices. With a slightly different arrangement of pellets than the examples documented by either Depeyrot or MEC, it may belong to a slightly later issue of deniers, as the attribution to Frisia given in MEC suggests a mint along the eastern periphery of the Frankish realm--where the minting of deniers likely spread from Neustria (although influence from the sceattas encountered in trade with England may challenge this idea). Either way, a fascinating piece worthy of attention by any collector of medieval French coins.
