Merovingian. Anonymous Denier ND (c. 670-750). XF. Paris, Palace mint, 1.23g, Dep-5 (Paris, le Palais), MEC-599, Prou-699. IN PALACIO, bust right (cuirassed?) with hair made up of pellets or globes (perhaps degenerated from pearl diadem) / adapted cross ancrée ('swastika') with hook on end of each limb. While it features the same palatial legend and cross on reverse, this example displays a different hair variety than Depeyrot, MEC, or Prou. While examples of similar style have appeared at auction before, they were not of such superior quality as the present piece and several featured scuffs across the obverse bust. An issue of the palace mint, this offering should certainly be taken advantage of by the collector of early medieval Frankish coins or the scholar of Merovingian history.
