Charles X de Bourbon gold Écu d'or au soleil 1592-A AU50 NGC, Paris mint, 3.31g, Fr-389, Dup-1172. An interesting and historic issue from the time immediately following the death of Henri III and the extinction of the House of Valois. Charles was a Cardinal and the Archbishop of Rouen when he was proclaimed King by the Catholic League. He was also recognized as king by the parliament in Paris, although he was a prisoner for his entire reign, which he renounced in favor of Henri IV. Despite his death in 1590, the Catholic League continued to mint coins in his name somewhat stubbornly at various mints under their control until 1597. Please note that the NGC attribution of this coin to Henri IV is incorrect.
