COLOMBIA. 1659-PoRS 8 Reales. Santa Fe de Nuevo Reino (Bogotá) mint. Philip IV (1621-1665). Restrepo M46. VF-35 (PCGS).
27.11 grams. Glossy dark gray with a single very bold and undoubled strike. The well-centered obverse offers a wealth of crisp detail, including the assayer, date, mintmark, and legend. Peripheral legends are mostly obscured, though hints of letters are visible here and there. The reverse is aligned to the left, but the denomination is visible at the left side and HILIP is crisp at the right. The shield is better detailed than perhaps any other coin of this type in the present collection. The latest edition of Restrepo lists 1659 as one of four dates of this type that were unlocated, along with 1658, 1660, and 1661. This is the Calbeto plate coin, #1354 on page 387, and is also photographed in Yriarte as the plate coin for Tipo VII.

From the Eldorado Collection of Colombian and Ecuadorian Coins.

Estimate: $2000.00- $4000.00
