COLOMBIA. 1814-JF 8 Reales. Popayán mint. Ferdinand VII (1808-1833). Restrepo 120.8. AU-58 (PCGS).
Bust of Carlos IV. The non-overdate Popayán 8 Reales of 1814 are scarcer than those of the overdate variety, especially in high grades. This piece is brilliant and frosty, well centered and nicely struck on an unusually broad round planchet. The surfaces appear granular at first, but magnification reveals an abundance of die rust, particularly on the reverse, and not any sort of corrosion or environmental effect. A natural die bulge is noted in the right obverse field, and some adjustment marks are seen at the central reverse. A beautiful piece, showing few flaws worth noting and a strong candidate for finest known of the non-overdate variety. Plated in the Elizondo book.
