ETHIOPIA. Coronation Medal of Haile Selassie I in Gold, ND ca. EE 1923 (ca. 1930).
27.77 gms. cf.Bruce-12; Gill-S14. Crowned bust left, legend around; Reverse: Throne of Solomon between two angels, Lion of Judah in front. Selassie was arguably one of the greatest public speakers of the twentieth century, and had a prophetic view of things to come in the 1930's. Upon being annexed by Mussolini in 1936, he appealed to the League Of Nations for relief. When the league did nothing, Selassie imbued "It is us today. It will be you tomorrow" foretelling the beginning of the Second World War some three years before it began. A terrific medal commemorating what was likely the coronation of the greatest Ethiopian leader to have ever lived. With case of issue. The obverse fields have been lightly cleaned displaying light wispy hairlines. Light attractive tone in the peripheries. UNCIRCULATED.
Estimate: $1100.00- $1500.00
