FRANCE. Ecu d'Or, 1564-H. La Rochelle Mint. Charles IX (1560-74). NGC MS-61.
Fr-378; Dupl-1057; Ci-1343. "écu d'or au soleil" struck at La Rochelle in the name of Charles IX. The Wars of Religion erupted in France during Charles's reign and La Rochelle changed hands several times and this coin may have been illegally issued by the Huguenots. Experiments with milled coinage were made during the reign of Henry II but this issue is hammered although it looks milled, being round and evenly struck. Light attractive tone, strong underlying luster and highly attractive. NGC MS-61.
Estimate: $1000.00- $1500.00
