GERMANY. Death of Baron Manfred von Richthofen, WWI Fighter Pilot Ace Silver Medal, 1918. NGC MEDAL MS-65.
36 mm. Kienast-288. By Karl Goetz. Bust, nearly facing of the "Red Baron" wearing a greatcoat and military cap, and displaying his "Blue Max" gallantry award. Inscription: "RITTMEISTER MANFRED FRHR V RICHTHOFEN" around. This is the much scarcer original reverse crediting him with 89 aerial victories and with the incorrect date of his death, 12 April. Before wide distribution the errors were discovered, and the majority of the medals correctly credit him with 80 victories, and note the date of his death as April 21, 1918. Matte dark pearl gray, lightening on the higher points of the design. NGC MEDAL MS-65.
