GUATEMALA. 8 Reales, ND (Decree of Oct. 31, 1840; Instituted Nov. 21 to Dec. 1840). NGC AU-53.
KM-120.3. Type III countermark; Sun over mountains on obverse; Reverse: Five-pointed star superimposed on bow, arrow and quiver. Countermarks applied at the same time independently from each other. Countermarked on 1832 Peru (Lima) 8 Reales, KM-142.3. In an effort to deter counterfeiting a decree was issued to have a secondary mark to be applied to the opposite side of all authorized coins. Ultimately this use of the independent dies proved to be inefficient and impractical. In December hinged dies were prepared which allowed much easier application. This countermark type is much more RARE than the types I, II & IV because it was used for less than a month. Both countermarks are deeply applied with good details though the reverse countermark is doubled and is somewhat obscured, but still clear. Light attractive golden tone on the obverse while the reverse display lovely blue, green, purple and golden hued tone. Countermark AU Standard. NGC AU-53.
