PHRYGIA, Eucarpeia. Maximus. Caesar, AD 235/6-238. Æ (21mm, 4.22 g, 6h). Bare head right / Cybele standing facing, holding uncertain object; lion to left. RPC VI online 5608.1 = BMC 26. Good VF, dark green patina, with pleasing earthen highlights. Very rare, with RPC citing just four specimens, at least three of which are in public collections. Likely the finest known.

Though clearly referencing Maximus as Caesar, the portrait on this issue has much more adult features. Quite possibly without a clear idea of the likeness of Maximus, the celator merely imitated a rendition of his father, Maximinus, for this type instead. Either way, a fairly bold and attractive countenance for a provincial issue.
