Watch List notes:

Letter written on the day of Napoleon's first abdication. Dated April 5, 1814, signed by Lieutenant General Comte Morand, clearly showing the confusion that existed even among the most trusted lieutenants of the Emperor. The Allies had occupied Paris and Napoleon was in Fontainebleau, out of contact with most of his military leaders and high civilian servants. Morand had apparently followed the general trend, by accumulating a fortune through war spoils and he now got scared "wishing to restitute without delay to the Mobilier the silverware that I have acquired at the auctions held at Mayence (Mainz, Germany), ...", which also proves how the French ransacked Europe. Very fine.
