Julius Caesar. 49-48 B.C. AR fourrée denarius (18.06 mm, 2.15 g, 7 h). Military mint traveling with Caesar. CAESAR, elephant advancing right, trampling on horned serpent / Simpulum, sprinkler, axe (surmounted by a wolf’s head), and apex. Cf. Crawford 443/1; Cf. CRI 9; Cf. Sydenham 1006; Cf. RSC 49. VF, some roughness, obverse off center.

The obverse is an allusion to the victory of good over evil; in this case, Caesar's victory over the Gauls. The reverse refers to Caesar's office of Ponifex Maximus, displaying the symbols of the pontificate.
