Claudius I Æ As. Rome, AD 41-50. TI CLAVDIVDIVS CAESAR AVG P M TR P IMP (sic), bare head left / Minerva, helmeted, standing right, hurling javelin and with shield on left arm; S-C across fields. RIC 100; C. 84; BMC 149. 10.81g, 29mm, 7h.
Near Very Fine.
The obverse inscription includes a die-cutter's error in the repeated letters DIV. (The biographer Suetonius (30.1) describes how Claudius "linguae titubantia" (stammered); perhaps this coin is playing a joke on the emperor by highlighting his flaw.)
