Commodus AR Denarius. Rome, AD 191-192. [L A]EL AVREL COM[M AVG P FEL], Commodus head right, wearing the lion skin headdress of Hercules / [HERCVLI] ROMANO AVG, bow, club and quiver with arrows. RIC 253; RSC 195. 1.28g, 15mm, 6h.
Very Fine.
By the time this type was struck the emperor's obsession with the hero Hercules had grown to permeate all areas of his life, and as this denarius shows even the traditional Roman deities were dispensed with and replaced.
