Celts in Eastern Europe AR Tetradrachm. In imitation of Thasos off Thrace. Mint in the region of the lower Danube, Moesia, or Thrace, late 2nd-1st centuries BC. Stylized and degraded wreathed head of Dionysos right / Stylized and degraded Herakles standing facing, head left, holding club, lion skin draped over arm; inscription rendered as vertical and horizontal rows of dots. Cf. HGC 6, 359 (for prototype). 16.18g, 32mm, 1h.

Extremely Fine. Light golden tone over lustrous metal.

From the collection of D.G., United Kingdom.

This rare Celtic imitation tetradrachm displays a head of Dionysos so degraded that it is hard to identify specific elements within the design, and indeed at first glance some believe it more resembles a cockerel within a square frame border than Dionysos.
