Augustus. 27 BC-AD 14. AV Aureus (20mm, 7.91 g, 6h). Lugdunum (Lyon) mint. Struck 8 BC. AVGVSTVS DIVI F, laureate head right / C • CAES, AVGVS • F, Caius Caesar galloping right, holding spear and shield in left hand, reins in right; behind, aquila between two signa. RIC I 198; Lyon 68; Calicó 174a; BMCRE 498; Biaggi 90. VF, a few marks.

In 17 BC, Augustus adopted the sons of Agrippa and Julia, Caius and Lucius, as his heirs. This coin commemorates Caius' accompaniment of Tiberius on the latter's campain against the Germanic Sicambri. Although Caius was still only twelve years old at the time and must have had little to do with the actual affairs of the campaign, this issue depicts the explicitly-named "son of Augustus" heroically charging into battle.
