Carinus. As Caesar, AD 282-283. AV Aureus (19mm, 4.37 g, 6h). Siscia mint. 1st emission, November AD 282. M AVR CARINV-S NOB CAES, laureate and cuirassed bust right / VICTO-RIA AVG, wingless Victory standing left on globe, holding wreath in extended right hand and trophy in left. When the emperor Carus assumed the purple, he elevated his sons, Carinus and Numerian to the rank of Caesar. Carus left Carinus in command of the western half of the empire, while he and Numerian traveled east to campaign against the Sasanian Persians. During this time, Carinus successfully led campaigns against the Germans and Britons, who tried to take advantage of the emperor's absence. This aureus was likely issued to proclaim these successful campaigns.
