Small steel navigational dividers from an unidentified early-1800s whaling ship. 39 grams, 4" long. Unlike earlier bronze versions, which generally had replaceable iron points in the arms, this later model (made of so-called "blister" steel for the presence of minute air pockets in the metal) had integrated points, still sharp on this example, which is a dark brown in color and is fully functional (no corrosion or rust, presumably due to being "buried deeply"). From the wreck of an early-1800s whaling ship off Nantucket, pedigreed to our Auction #5 (lot #1489).
Estimate: $100-150
