Military Medal London Gazette 19th April 1945
5347680 Private Sidney Shaw, 1st Battalion The Green Howards
Private Shaw has been a Battalion Stretcher Bearer since Sicily.
On the occasion of the breakout from the Anzio Bridgehead on the 23rd May 1944, 1 Green Howards launched an attack against the left coastal sector of the enemy position. Private Shaw was a Regimental Stretcher Bearer attached to "D" Company, the first assault Company.
After the Company made the initial crossing of the River Moletta, a minefield had to be crossed before the first objective could be assaulted. During the advance a mine exploded very near to Private Shaw, blowing him off his feet and concussing him for several minutes. When he recovered he noticed a badly wounded man lying inside the minefield several yards away. Without giving a thought to his own safety and in a semi-dazed condition, he crawled through the minefield to the wounded man and lifting him on his back succeeded in getting him clear of the mines and back to the Regimental Aid Post under heavy shell fire. Private Shaw then insisted on re-joining the Company and for the remainder of the action, a period of 36 hours, he continued to evacuate casualties in the open and under the most arduous conditions, in the face of constant close range sniping, and after the enemy had shown that he had no intention of respecting medical personnel.
The conduct of this man throughout the action was of the highest order and had a tremendous effect both on the fighting troops and the reaming Regimental Stretcher Bearers, some of whom had only had a few days training owing to the heavy casualties.
He has concisely shown a high sense of duty and has worked indefatigably. His conduct has been in accordance with the highest standards of gallantry in the difficult work in the field.
Sold with a large archive of original photographs; his Service Release Book, Army Book X801; Postal Box for the Military Medal over a hand written memoir; a modern Green Beret with Green Howards Cap badge; a photograph of Sidney wearing his medals in his blazer in later life; framed ad glazed copies of his citation; the award certificate for his Veterans Badge with Badge; photograph album from his time in Jerusalem; a DVD entitled Jewish war Heroes of the British Armed Forces in which Private Shaw recounts the winning of the Military Medal; the award slip for his campaign medals and the award slip, glazed and framed for the Military Medal notification that The King was unable to give Sidney his medal in person. A comprehensive and most complete World War Two Gallantry group.
The medals are mounted for wear and contained in a glazed frame of which the back is removable to facilitate wearing the medals.
