Stamped PB Sling Bullet for the Roman Tenth Legion(?). Uncertain, circa 1st century BC. C(retrograde)M and X incuse stamps / Circular stamp(?). Cf. Roma 42, 1017. 67.20g, 41mm long, 19mm wide.

Fairly well preserved. Of historic interest.

From the collection of V.B., United Kingdom.

Used by Julius Caesar during his invasion of Gaul, the Legio X Equestris (as it was originally known as the legionaries were mounted as cavalry) remained faithful to Caesar during the Civil War against Pompey, though was disbanded in 45 BC.

Reconstituted in 42 BC, the legion fought for Octavian, Marc Antony and Lepidus against Caesar's assassins and were with Marc Antony for his defeat at the Battle of Actium. Thereafter, reinforced with replacements from other legions, the legion became the Legio X Gemina.
