Marc Antony, as Triumvir and Imperator (43-31 BC). AR denarius (17mm, 3.74 gm, 6h). NGC MS 5/5 - 5/5. Legionary issue, mint moving with Antony in Greece (Aegae or Patrae), 32-31 BC. ANT • AVG-III • VIR • R • P • C, war galley under oar right with triple ram prow and scepter tied with fillet / LEG-III, aquila between two signa. Crawford 544/15. Sydenham 1217. RSC 28. Truly exceptional example with strong strike, excellent details and centering on pristine flan. A spectacular example in a heavily-collected series that is often well circulated or off center.
There were several 3rd legions, but Legio tertia Augusta might have been the one references on this issue, which served under Pompey during his civil war against Julius Caesar (49-45 BC), and under Octavian in the civil war against Marc Antony.
