Lockett, part I, Glendining, 6-9 June 1955, lot 1156, £40 to Spink

The Norweb cataloguer, following the Lockett cataloguer, gives the moneyer's name as walchelinvs'. We have read the name as whichelinvs. As all the known examples are from the same pair of dies, there cannot be any variation in the spelling. For what it is worth the Brice / Montagu / Murdoch specimen more clearly reads whichelinvs and the engraver of the plate in Ruding (suppl.II, pl.II no.15) has taken pains to make the legend clear and he also gives whichelinvs. The coin illustrated in Hawkins is the British Museum example which does not show the first part of the name.
'Walkelin, the moneyer of Derby, is referred to in contemporary deeds and it is suggested that this type may have been issued by Robert de Ferrers, earl of Derby, during Stephen's captivity during the summer of 1141 when there was considerable chaos all over the country, particularly amongst the king's supporters, the unusual lettering and crude workmanship of the coins being the work of the local seal cutter'. Mack, BNJ XXXV, p.68

Estimate: £5000 - £6000
