(x) Eustace FitzJohn, Penny, 1.18g, York, Thomas FitzUlf, evst-acivs+, the second s retrograde, helmeted and armoured full-length figure standing right, holding sword in right hand, large annulets decorating sword hilt, other ornament in field to left, rev. + thoma[s filiv]s vlf, the th ligate, cross patteé with barred arms in quatrefoil, large pellet in annulet at centre, and others on cusps and in spandrels (Allen p. 313, no. 112 - this coin; Mack 223; N.929a; S.1316), a few surface marks, otherwise struck on a sound, slightly wavy flan, very fine, extremely rare.

Eustace FitzJohn, son of John 'monoculus' FitzRichard, served as Justiciar of the North under Henry I, was lord of Alnwick and Malton, and Constable of Bamburgh and Knaresborough Castles. He was suspected of plotting with Matilda and in 1138 was deprived of the custodianship of Bamburgh Castle. He sided with the Scots and was wounded at the Battle of the Standard. He survived and prospered, serving Henry II until his death in 1157.
Thomas FitzUlf (FitzUlviet), was an Alderman in the City of York and is mentoned in the Pipe Rolls of 1130. On the coins his name is rendered in Latin 'filius Ulf'.
