ANGLO-SAXON, Kings of All England. Cnut. 1016-1035. AR Penny (18mm, 0.73 g, 4h). Quatrefoil type (BMC viii, Hild. E). Oxnaford (Oxford) mint; Ælfweald, moneyer. Struck circa 1017-1023. + CNVT REX ΛNGLO, crowned bust left in quatrefoil / + ΛLFPO:LD ON OC, voided long cross with triple-crescent ends and pellet at center, over quatrefoil; pellet in 2nd quarter. Blackburn & Lyon Lon. C late style; SCBI –; Hild. –; BMC –; North 781; SCBC 1157. EF.

From the Collection of an Underwriter (purchased from Saltford Coins, March 2007).

The reading of the mint signature on this coin is problematic, as the final letter is not clearly engraved. While it may have the appearance of an R, the only possibility for that letter to be correct would be if the reverse legend would read ΛLFPO:LD O NOR, so that the mint is Norwich. However, no moneyer by this name operated at Norwich under Cnut. The alternative would be the reading above, with the C engraved in a linear form, resulting in the mint being Oxford, where a moneyer by this name is known for all of Cnut’s coin types struck there.
