IONIA, Uncertain. Circa 625-600 BC. EL Forty-Eighth Stater (5mm, 0.27 g). Milesian standard. Geometric type. Pellet in center of linear diamond shape within linear rectangle; striations in outer margins / Incuse square punch. Weidauer –; Traité –; SNG Kayhan –; Rosen 293. VF.


The pellet within the diamond shape on the obverse is similar to the depiction of the eye on some early schematic lion head issues (cf. Weidauer 122 and Elektron II 26). It is therefore possible that these coins constitute a new denomination for that series.
