Republic Ecuador en Colombia earliest 1/2 Real 1833-GJ, KM12.2, VF30 NGC, rare variety with the denomination expressed using a fraction "1/2" rather than the much more available "Mo". Nicely toned with strong features, charmingly crude and slightly off-center. Earliest series with the obverse legend as "EL ECUADOR EN COLOMBIA - QUITO. The dies for this type were hand cut and as a result there is a great variety to the shapes of the letters and numerals. Comparing this example to the other three offered in this most unusual presentation allows one to note the lettering and device styles and locations. Including the Dana Roberts collection, the Maulme offering and all others in the past half century, we recall none that had four different dies of this scarce item.From The Glenn Gilman.
