Edward III (1327-77) gold Noble ND, S-1503, North-1232, Treaty Series (1363-69), Aquitaine title, annulet before king's name, AU58 NGC, a pleasing and sharply detailed Noble without flaws or flan cracks or damage of any kind, mostly crisp letters in legends, centers well detailed, lovely old-gold color. (Mis-identified as S-1490 on grading insert.) All in all, a great piece to study the design qualities of a coinage first created during this reign, the Noble in gold, valued in its day at 6 shillings 8 pence and intended in large part for easing the trade in wool with Flanders. It was the first time gold was coined in any large amount for seven centuries, and the obverse design showing the king standing with regalia within the ship of state may have been inspired by the British naval victory at Sluys in 1340. In later years, the gold Noble varied in value and somewhat in design, evolving eventually into the Ryal, but some of the finest detailed pieces have come down through the ages from this reign.

Estimate: 4000.00-6000.00 USD
