Edward VI (1547-53) gold Half Sovereign ND, in the name of Henry VIII, S-2391, N-1865 (rare), Tower mint, London, Arrow mm (struck 1547-49), VF Details "scratches" NGC, in point of fact an absolutely normal flan state for the period, only slightly wavy and complete, obverse motif beautifully centered and showing quite a lot of detail in the boy-king's chest and face, reverse legend clearer than that of the obverse but central area of reverse is very typically uneven in strike and lacking many details of the design. Pleasing old reddish gold toning adds to the appeal of this scarce gold issue. The poor, sickly boy was only ten to twelve years old when this coin was minted, at which time England was governed by a council consisting mainly of Edward's uncle, Edward Seymour the Duke of Somerset, and John Dudley the Earl of Warwick, two powerful men who briefly ruled the land as the king's health steadily declined. From The Marston Collection of British Coins.
