Charles I (1625-49) gold Unite ND, S-2686, Tower Mint under Parliament, Lis mm (1625), XF40 NGC, shallowly engraved worn portrait and yet still clear in most details, some doubling in legends, nice full flan without cracks or damage, pleasing old-gold color. As is true of most of the coins from this collection, it was chosen for its overall good eye-appeal instead of for its exceptionally high quality. That makes these coins desirable but very affordable. This "20 shillings" gold coin was minted right near the beginning of the reign. Its simple 3-word Latin legend on reverse translates as "United kingdoms flourish" -- tragically ironic in light of the history that lay ahead. From The Marston Collection of British Coins.
